Alright, so this is outside of both Nakia and I's comfort zone.. She's not one to ask for help, even when she really really needs it. However, we've had so many people reaching out wanting to help and only a few days in, the expenses are starting to pile up and she wont be able to work again until she's healed. So, if there were ever a time to open an avenue for help, this is it.
Many of you know Nakia had a horse flip over backwards on her while loading into the starting gates at Remington Park. She was very lucky that it didn't crush her abdomen, but it certainly snapped her left femur clean in half. Those who witnessed it said it sounded like a cannon firing when it broke. This really was a kick while she was down as she was just recovering from a bout of infections that had her hospitalized earlier in the week.
Just as the bills were coming in for the first hospital trips, this injury took away her ability to earn the money to pay those bills, as well as adding additional expense and complication on top.
Although she's recovering from the infections and finally home with some fresh hardware inside her femur, done with what became a very rough hospital stay thanks to some extremely careless nurses, it's becoming apparent that the struggle isn't over.
A couple of months out of the saddle means missing some very important races and starting the season furlongs behind. We all know Nakia will be fighting to get back in the saddle, I'm just hoping if she can get the funds to cover her bills she'll at least wait until she's healed so she doesn't face a lifetime of pain over a couple month's wage.
Thanks to everyone who has reached out and supported already. It has been all but overwhelming, but immensely appreciated. I've truly been amazed at what an incredible community the equine world is. Thank you.
