Nail, a short horror film by Piers Motherway

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Piers Motherway. With your help, I can become a professional filmmaker.

Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to tell stories for a living, whatever form that may take. Now, I've completed my Screen degree at Curtin university and I finally have the chance. At Curtin Razor, their film festival for third year screenings, I won best Director for my film, Keeps Me Grounded.

Seen above: Piers receiving Best Director at Curtin Razor Film Festival 2024 from Holly Miller Brouwer, an award winning West Australian filmmaker.

This award has given me the chance to pursue film as a career and expand my portfolio. All donations to this page go towards supporting my next film, Nail.

About the film

Nail is a short horror/thriller about a serial killer who gets more than he bargained for when his next victim is protected by someone just as dangerous as himself. Despite a gruesome premise, it explores themes of love, connections, and determination in the face of hopeless circumstances.

This film is heavily inspired by the The Tell-Tale Heart, a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. It features a protagonist just as untrustworthy and dangerous, but subverts the narrative by presenting him with a paranoia that might be justified after all. The atmosphere is laced with deceit and tension as a monster who abuses the unwritten rules of conversation and society slowly creeps closer to getting what he wants.

Donations

It is impossible to make a film so ambitious without some support from the people around me. We estimate that the final cost of this film will be in excess of $10 000 but for this initial fundraiser we've set a realistic target of $5000. These donations will go towards increasing the production quality of the film as well as helping bolster my career.

  • Film Festivals: In order to show my work to the industry, the films I make must be submitted to film festivals, which have costly entry fees. I intend to submit not just Nail, but also the short film I made in university, Keeps Me Grounded. The more I can raise, the wider an audience I can show my work to, and the more people who'll know my name.
  • Production Design: Nail relies heavily on detailed, cramped set design to evoke the claustrophobic fear I intend to, and needs a makeup/costume department with the budget to make its characters as threatening, lifelike, or sympathetic as possible.
  • Equipment: Cameras and equipment of professional quality will be needed in order for my work to be taken seriously. They'll either need to be rented or purchased, depending on my budget. If I raise enough to buy my own camera, I can significantly decrease further, future costs.
  • Computer: In order for me to edit my footage, I'll need editing software and a computer that can run it. A portion of the films budget will go towards upgrading my current setup and licensing that software, not just for Nail, but all my future projects.

Thank you to everyone who gives support. I hope I can make you proud. Please donate whatever you feel you are comfortable with. You can read the first draft script for Nail here.
