Nadine's Trip To China

Greetings and Humble Salutations Everyone!

My name is Nadine Gardner; I am a second year Psychology student at Florida A&M University. Throughout the course of this semester, I have worked day and night searching and applying for various educational opportunities. With all of the hard work and perseverance I have put in, I have been fortunate enough to have received multiple offers for this coming summer. I have decided to move forward and accept the offer of the HBCU China Scholarship Networking Opportunity. This program will require me to travel to China to study Mandarin and learn about the Chinese culture. This program will provide the means to make myself even more marketable in terms of my particular field of study by giving me the contingency to learn another language. From June 1st to July 30th of 2017 I will study at Beijing University of Chemical Technology as a student apart of the China Scholarship Program.

I am overjoyed about traveling outside of the country. Being able to experience a new environment while learning a new language is an amazing opportunity. Learning a new language and understanding someone’s culture is a pivotal factor when it comes to establishing new relationships. When you are able to understand someone’s language you are able to communicate with people from different backgrounds, but when you are able to understand someone’s culture, you are able to broaden your connections because there is a level of understanding and respect that you have for one another.

I chose to travel to China, opposed to accepting the other summer opportunities because I believe that traveling to China will require myself to be pushed mentally the most. Traveling to a different country is going to be a new experience for me, not only is the language different, the culture is different as well. Experiencing a summer in China will enable me to become more open minded to a great deal of things, thus making me a more well rounded person. Upon my return from China, I would like to share what I have learned with other students in hopes of inspiring them to want more for themselves by stepping out of their comfort zone and exploring the world. I believe all students should travel abroad if they are afforded the chance because it forces you to push yourself mentally by finding something new in yourself.

I am taking the steps to further not only my education but myself as well. The HBCU China Scholarship Networking program will pay for all expenses except for travel fees and the visa. It is up to me to take the initiative to come up with the money for the expenses not being funded. I am asking for a total of $2,000 for the trip to China. If I reach my goal the funds will cover the flight as well as the visa fees.

Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated! This personal statement is not enough to express how I would feel if I am able to travel to China in June and share my experience with others.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully it is enough to support my cause.
