Cat Sanctuary
My wife and I just started feeding the outside cats to be nice and it has fully developed into a Cat Sanctuary.
We ended up taking 8 stray cats into our home. There are also several outside and 6 kittens that need to be fixed, so we have to hold them on our front porch for at least 6 months.
However, if we can pull together some funding, an expansion of the operation can be achieved.
On the front porch we want to add a bunch of carpeted shelves leading up to a ceiling catwalk. That’s a relatively inexpensive project, but it still takes money and as of right now all of our funds are going to feedings, litters and taking them to the vet to get checked up, which is not cheap.
I spent nearly $1,000 on a Chewy order of just food, yesterday. And I still need to get some litter.
We also want to add a very large screened in area in the back yard, connected to the existing fence and part of the back deck. This will allow cats to come and go as they please into a fun, safe place to get away from the elements and neighborhood stray dogs, etc. I’m not even sure how much something like that would cost with building materials, adding several cat doors and play areas within the enclosure.
There are possibly another couple female cats that we need to capture and get fixed, so they do not reproduce anymore. Currently we are working so hard with everything else, the time is not available for a capture mission. A possible outsource may be required.
Beyond all of the normal activities of a sanctuary, feedings, litters and doctor visits, we just want them to be more comfortable and safe in the surrounding area.
We’ve already had a stray dog come into our carport and kill one of our favorite cats. We would very much like to avoid that in the future by making a more permanent safe space, while still being able to feed and properly care for them.
