Hello everyone my name is Blessing Oderinde a Nigerian citizen; I bring this appeal for financial and medical help to you all on behalf of my younger brother Victory Oderinde who is currently battling with a critical and life threatening medical condition. Victory is a 21year old male, Nigerian citizen, and a current 300level Computer Engineering Student at the Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria.
Victory had always been a healthy young man up until the 1st of May 2017 when he started to complain of an unbearable stomach pain that would not go away right before his semester exams. He was given first aid treatment to help subdue the pain but all to no avail. On the 3rd of May, 2017 Victory he had to do an emergency surgery where it was discovered that his bowel was found to be in grangerous complex vovulus and hence recested since then he has been diagnosed with Short Bowel Syndrome/ Intestinal Failure. Till now Victorys digestive system has not been the same. It has been a constant physical, mental, financial and emotional rollercoaster for my family and me. Over the years Victory has become so sick and completely dependent on people and medications, regular daily activities have become tedious tasks for him.
Victorys bowel was found in a gangrenous complex volvulus and as a result of which the doctors had to carry out a resection (cut and join) through a jejunoileal anastomosis procedure leaving him with a very small sized bowel. Initially we did not have a total understanding of the surgery and its implications, and it was really tough to accept all that was said to us about Victory being left with a small sized bowel. After the surgery he was discharged and we were told that eventually he would heal and feel a lot better. Unfortunately it did not become any easier after the surgery, Victory had little control over his use of the toilet as he had to use the toilet a total of 8-10 times on a daily basis; subsequently he became so sick due to his constant loss of body mass and fluid from his frequent use of the toilet and vomiting.
According to the surgeons, he has only about 30 cm of Jejunum left, in addition to his colon (large bowel); currently he has his duodenum, approximately 30 cm of Jejunum and his ascending colon down to the remaining part of his large bowel. Now the Jejunum and Ileum are very important in food digestion and absorption into the body unfortunately these were the parts that were found non-viable as a result of the bowel twisting together and as such they had to be surgically removed, leaving only about the initial 30 cm of the Jejunum.
Over the years due to his constant stooling and vomiting he gets very sick, dehydrated and eventually passes which takes us back to the hospital where he gets admitted. Since his diagnosis Victory has maintained an average weight of 30. Some days it gets so bad and we have to carry him around, feed him and bathe him as it has become practically impossible for him to do these things for himself. Most of the time his complaints include three or more of the following; severe diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance, hypotension, hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, irrational talking, muscle wasting, drastic weight loss, malabsorption, vomiting, swollen feet, severe stomach upset, very loose/watery, severe anemic condition.
We started his clinics in December of 2017 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital where he was being seen both as an in and out patient by different specialists for almost a year, they did everything they knew they could do for him. Our visits to the hospital were a constant back and forth, it had become our second home. At the end of nearly every day there is a new medication to be gotten and a new test to run, the bills are constantly piling on us and weighing heavily on our family. At the middle of 2018 he was placed on Total Parental Nutrition which is a form of intravenous nutrition, the TPN is quite expensive and also painful for him when administered. Over time we have relied on financial help from his school, individuals and various groups.
With everything that has been done and spent so far Victory is still ailing. He managed to resume school in 2019 after a bit of relief which he realized from the TPN; he returned to school with a lot of drugs and the TPN inclusive, he was managed with his medications at the school's clinic. He shuffled between the classroom and the clinic quite often which was not easy or convenient for him.
It has not been easy to maintain and manage the situation as my dad is a farmer, my mum a small-scale trader and I work as an intern pharmacist. His medical bills are overwhelming in comparison to all our incomes put together, on some days we feel hopeless and lost because we have no idea where the funds to maintain him would come from, but at the same time we are aware that we cannot fold our arms and do nothing.
I spend a good portion of my day researching for possible medical help and solutions for him in countries like the USA, the UK and even India. It has been really hard carrying out the research and reaching out to doctors outside the country because I am doing this all on my own with no definite guidance on what hospitals to look into or what doctors to reach out to, but I am making steady progress. I am doing the best I can but the situation is honestly overwhelming at this point. No matter how hard I explain to people they don't understand it.
The entire family appeals to the general public for help, we are seeking for more professional help either locally or internationally, we would appreciate if we can have contacts with these medical specialists who can attend specifically to this young mans case, for we are terrified as his health continues to deteriorate and we cannot begin to imagine losing him We are also seeking and appealing to the general public for further financial assistance to be able to cater for the medical bills that will be required to resolve this traumatic condition. We request for help from NGOs, Foundations in short bowel syndrome, Worlds Best specialist and Physicians in the field of gastroenterology and other fields as pertaining to his health. Please help Victory to get all the help he needs to get his life back. Any medical and financial assistance that can be of help to him and his family would be largely appreciated.
Thank you very much
