Humanity vs COVID-19: San Francisco

Dear Family, Friends...

My name is Melissa Nickas. I am a Bay Area native and have been a Registered Nurse at both San Francisco Bay Area level I trauma centers, in the Emergency Department and currently, in the Intensive Care Unit. Working with low income populations, acknowledging the major disparities in healthcare and providing care to those both domestically and globally, regardless of their ability to pay, is my passion. As a Nurse, saving lives at the bedside while working inside of the hospital is only part of the war that we are currently fighting against COVID-19. The real battle is outside of the hospital, insidiously plaguing those who have no control over what is available to them as HUMANS. This crisis is nothing new for these underserved populations, but I can no longer stand by and watch the community that I serve suffer and die more rapidly during this pandemic as a result of hunger, lack of shelter and basic resources to survive- it is unacceptable.

I need your help.

Currently, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital has launched efforts we refer to as, "Unidos en Salud-United in Health" to test everyone older than 4 years of age for COVID-19 in the Mission District. This area is among some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in San Francisco, echoing the growing economic inequality and health care disparities in the city and within the LatinX community. When I learned of these efforts, I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to do MORE. As an employee of the City and County of San Francisco, working within the Mission District- this is my community. As a Nurse, it is my duty to help my community. As a HUMAN, it is my responsibility to be part of the change that I would like to see in this world.

Your donations will go to major San Francisco food banks (SF-Marin Food Bank) & non-profit resource centers for Latinos in the Mission District (La Raza Community Resource Center). Donations will provide services from organizations that promote supplying the basics for a healthy life, which include having livable income, housing, sufficient food, tools and resources needed to survive. More specifically:

Your donation will be used to:

- Provide a week's worth of food for a needy family
- Provide shelter for a family who has lost housing
- Support a client who is struggling with unemployment
- Provide hand sanitizer and masks (if available)

We should ALL have these resources. We ALL deserve a chance to succeed, and a chance to survive.

With appreciation,
