Please help! It was a "normal" day and as my husband was just getting up to get ready for work - he said something isn't right and grabbed his head. Then he could not say anymore - just fell on the bed in pain. We called 911 and they rushed him to the nearest ER. After that they life flighted him 3 hours away to a specialty Neurology Hospital, Shands in Gainsville Fl. His brain was bleeding. They immediately put a tube in to drain the blood and fluid off his brain (you can see it in the picture). He then got moved to ICU. We were in ICU for I believe 13 days (days are running together). In ICU he had 3 more brain surgeries - so 4 brain surgeries total. One of those surgeries was an open brain surgery - they did have to remove a portion of his brain due to the bruising. He had to put a shunt in because even after the surgeries his brain could not tolerate the pressure so now it will forever drain in his stomach area. He also suffered from a stroke while in surgery. We finally got moved out of ICU but are still here in the hospital, I believe it is 16 days now. The surgery was such a unique and hard surgery our surgeon is doing a write up about the procedure in the BMJ Journal. My husband will be moving (if all goes as planned) to an inpatient rehab facility Monday. Where he is expected to stay up to 2 months. He has lost sensation on his right side, coordination & some mobility on left side, and can't remember all conversations. He hallucinates some and has a hard time staying awake. However DRs are very optimistic that he will make a very good recovery. He is ready to start working and getting back to life as much to normalcy as he can. We don't like to ask for help but after getting the bill for JUST the helicopter ride in the amount of $67000 I feel as I don't have an option. We do have insurance however we have a huge out of pocket max and copays. He was the sole provider in our family and disability is only 60% of his paycheck. We just moved to FL a year ago we know nobody here and have no family around. We moved for his job (which is in healthcare) they allowed him to go on FMLA while he is recovering. We could really use some help if you are able. If not there is no hard feelings at all - we totally understand. We ask that you continue to pray for us - God will provide. Thank you all for everything!!
UPDATE 2026:
Although we are incredibly thankful for the progress made since the life-changing brain surgeries and stroke in 2021, recovery has never truly ended.
Over the years, my husband has continued to struggle with lasting neurological complications from his brain injury and stroke. He experiences ongoing mobility limitations, weakness, coordination difficulties, memory problems, neurological decline, and daily safety challenges that affect nearly every aspect of life.
Recently, due to continued medical complications and declining neurological functioning related to his condition, he was placed on FMLA from work once again. Unfortunately, his current disability income does not fully cover our housing and essential living expenses while we are also facing the additional costs of medically necessary home accessibility renovations.
We are now working to complete a handicap-accessible bathroom renovation through the VA HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) program. The VA has preapproved $6,800 toward the project, and we are incredibly grateful for that assistance. However, the total cost of the necessary modifications exceeds the approved amount, leaving us responsible for the remaining balance.
These renovations are not cosmetic. They are medically necessary for his safety, accessibility, independence, and quality of life at home. The modifications will help reduce fall risk and allow him to safely manage daily activities while dealing with the lasting effects of his brain injury and stroke.
We do not ask for help lightly, and we are deeply grateful for the love, prayers, support, and generosity that carried our family through the original medical crisis. We are humbly asking for help once again as we navigate this new season of challenges.
Every donation, prayer, and share truly means more than words can express.
Thank you for continuing to stand beside our family throughout this journey.
