This is going to be a long post...

Jason was in an MVA on 11/20 and suffered a Le Fort II fracture and a Chance fracture of L5. He was alert and oriented at the accident, even walked to his mom's house, which was a mile away, for help. We have been at U of L since 11/20. He had been in the ICU till Friday night. He is now in a Neuro step-down unit. He is recovering from both surgeries well. However, at some point, he suffered an injury to his brain. His MRI showed significant diffuse restriction due to hypoxic injury, which I am being told was from a lack of oxygen to the brain. He was walking and talking in the ER. He was intubated in the ER and on a vent for 7 days till after the surgeries. On day 7, he was extubated, showing concerning abnormal neurological symptoms. Now he mumbles, has difficulty forming words. He tracks me around the room, he will focus and work with me on moving his extremities, but is weak and shaky. His neurology and trauma team can't explain where the hypoxic injury occurred. I've asked if it's a diffuse axonal injury due to trauma, but they say the MRI shows a hypoxia pattern. He is making small improvements every day, but we have a long road ahead. We are looking at the Shirley Lab in Chicago for rehab. We are crossing our fingers with hopes of being accepted. If not Chicago, maybe Frazier rehab. The trauma team has discussed placing a PEG tube since his speech and swallowing aren't quite ready yet. This is all very scary with so many unknowns. Our family, especially our sons, Kaleb, Owen, and Oliver, could use your prayers and support. Anyone who knows my husband, Jason, knows his strong, stubborn, and determined personality will get us through this!
