2015 Denali Expedition
My name is Dan Wiwczar, and I am part of an all-veteran team heading to Alaska this Spring to climb the tallest mountain in North America- Mount McKinley (20, 320').
Upon returning from Afghanistan in 2009, climbing has played a huge role in my transition from the military. Many aspects of climbing parallel those of combat, and I have found it to be a tremendous way to reconnect with other vets, focus on the things that are really important during our time here on this planet, and to cope with some personal struggles with PTSD. I crossed paths with a non-profit called Veterans Expeditions in 2013 and have since been given the amazing opportunity to climb all over the country with them, and also to run trips throughout the Northeast, while playing a part in the organization's growth. This expedition will be VetEx's most ambitious undertaking yet, and I could use any help that you may have to offer to help me get there!
Our team will be spending 30 days in total in our attempt, with weather being our biggest challenge. I will also be filming the entire expedition.
My fundraising goal is $6000 includes $3000 for logistics/acquisition of gear specific for high altitude mountaineering, and $3000 for camera/filming gear:
Logistics/Gear:
While I already own most of the gear needed for this type of extended expedition, there are a few specific high altitude pieces of gear that I will need to purchase, as well as transportation to and from Alaska and the mountain, which is accessed by flying onto the Kahiltna Glacier.
Camera Gear:
I am selling my current camera setup and purchasing newer, lighter equipment more appropriate for this type of expedition. Cold temperatures and low oxygen levels require modern/light gear, with a focus on versatility for both filming and still images. Ounces will make a difference!
I appreciate your help, and thank you for even taking the time to read this page! I am training hard and look forward to giving Denali everything I've got.
