Motorized Van

My name is Deleta Crawford.  On May 30th, 2014 my life changed drastically.  I went from being a vibrant woman, whose favorite pastimes were walking, cooking and entertaining family, friends and neighbors to a wheelchair bound paraplegic.

It occurred one evening when my sister-in-law and I went grocery shopping.  As we exited the supermarket gun fire erupted around us.  As I turned to get out of arms way, I was struck by a bullet that ripped through my midsection damaging my liver, spleen, vertebras and spinal cord.  This resulted in my spleen being removed and me being paralyzed from the waist down.

I spent months in the hospital recovering from surgery and going through rehabilitation, learning how to function without the use of my legs.   In the meantime, major adjustments had to be done in my home to accommodate my circumstance; this placed a major strain on our finance.  

Progressively I am able to do more and more independently such as prepare meals and perform other chores.   However, it is challenging to get around outside of my home which is the reason for this “gofundme” request.  I am asking for assistance in purchasing a wheelchair accessible mini-van.   When travel via a regular vehicle, I must transfer from my wheelchair to the car.   This is a physical burden on me and my family especially my husband of over 30 years.  As we both age I am concern that he or I may be hurt during this process.   

Though things are not the same as they were prior to that dreadful day, I am grateful that I have my life and my loving family and friends.  I am also grateful for whatever you may find in your heart to offer.
