Teddy’s Back Surgery

Donation protected
Hello -

Thank you for hearing Teds story. My wife Leilani and I are grateful for even the consideration. Prayers are appreciated for those who don’t have the means to give!

Ted Tucker Rafter is our 3 year old dachshund. He is dachshund through and through, no need to run the DNA. He is stubborn to his core, but equally funny, loving, empathetic, and a total play boy.

As for many of us millennials without kids (yet) he’s become like a son. He’s helped us through some really hard times. He will literally run to us when we cry to lick our tears and lay with us. (Still not sure if it’s the salty tears he likes).

Earlier this year Ted was unofficially diagnosed with IVDD. This is extremely common in dachshunds. We knew that when we got him, but to be honest we thought this would be a problem in his later years of life. Fun fact, IVDD diagnosis is most common between the ages of 3-6. Not fun.

To officially diagnose IVDD you need an MRI. Another fun fact, MRI’s are extremely expensive.

In January of this year, Ted jumped down for our ottoman while playing with our other dog and froze behind the couch. A few minutes later my wife Leilani found him and it sounded like he couldn’t breathe. At first we thought he was having a seizure.

So we took him to the ER vet close by and come to find out quickly it was a back injury. His symptoms got fairly severe. He was extremely wobbly when walking, and eventually went 24 hours without going to the bathroom. Through the right medication and rest, he got better in about three weeks, eventually getting back to his normal playful self.

Fast forward to last Monday and he was playing outside until he abruptly stopped. He started shaking and crying and we immediately knew what it was.

This time unfortunately, rest and medicine did not do the trick. He was still in extreme pain and showing signs of regression even with the same combo of medicine that worked last time.

This morning I took him the Blue Pearl in Maitland for an emergency appointment with the neurologist. By the afternoon we got the MRI and they confirmed, there was a largely herniated disc causing all the problems. To permanently fix the problem with that disc, surgery was really our only option.

Ted is currently in surgery as I write.

Surgery, MRI, 2 days recovering in the hospital will total around $11,000.

We trust that the Lord will provide. Leilani and I again would like to reiterate that there is no pressure. We are doing this for those who are able and willing to help.

Thank you so much for hearing Ted’s story. Prayers are accepted for his surgery and recovery. Updates to come!!
