My name is Karissa Sanez and I am student at Monmouth University currently finishing up my graduate degree in social work. My colleague, Sofia and I are helping the Madonna House raise money to put towards their mortgage bill. Madonna House is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to serving impoverished women and children around Monmouth County. Rebecca Blonski, the founder of Madonna House, was inspired to start this organization when she saw the conditions her son had lived in when she adopted him from Mexico in 1983. Rebecca’s goal is to serve women and children by providing supplies such as clothing, baby furniture, toys, diapers and formula for free.
Currently, the Madonna House is having difficulties in paying their mortgage bill. Rebecca owes over $100,000 and must be paid by the year 2016 or they will be closed down. Madonna House is not government funded and only accepts donations from the community.
The reason why this organization is so important to me is because I intern at Jersey Shore University Medical Center on the maternity and neonatal intensive care unit. My supervisor and I refer a majority of our patients to the Madonna House if they have a lack of resources for their newborn. If this agency shuts down, there is no other agency like Madonna House in Monmouth County who can provide this type of service to our mothers. Majority of the referrals the agency receives are from local hospitals, county welfare departments, schools, churches and social service organizations. This is a non denominational organization that for years, has been providing their service to thousands of mothers and children all over the county.
