My name is Amanda, I am a film composer, and this is my story:

At the age of four, holding my mother’s hand, I went inside my first music school. We lived on the outskirts of the city, far from school, and every morning we drove on a dirt road through a foggy forest. That was the road where my mother played music for my brother and me, and I think it was at that point where a seed began to sprout. As we drove, she told us stories about the warriors in the mist while the percussion and Hungarian violins in the car’s radio scored her words; we turned that trip into a unique adventure. Her voice was coupled with the music and the forest landscape –it was a live movie; I could see the warriors march out of the mist to the rhythm of the drums.

This is how my childhood was built. The surreal blended with everyday life, and without planning it it took root and became the foundation of my passion. I studied piano and music composition; I loved creating melodies and writing my own pieces. I had a dream: to create music for movies.

I fantasized about studying at Berklee College of Music, but I thought it was an impossible goal to achieve- especially since studying in the United States is very expensive. But then, little by little, everything began to fall into place.



After a lot of hard work and effort, I was accepted into Berklee. I was awarded a scholarship and my dream became more real than ever. It was still very expensive, but I knew it was worth the sacrifice, so I asked for the bank for a loan. I treated it as an investment in my future, like buying a house or a car. Then surprisingly, I received an email from the SGAE foundation. They had awarded me their largest scholarship, the Beca Integral para la Creación de Música Clásica Actual . It was a miracle that I did not expect.

Even with these grants, I still could not afford to complete my entire degree at Berklee. I only had enough money for one year, but I just had to take a risk. I had fought too hard to give up now. I knew if I could just get my foot in the door, there was hope. I thought that if I studied diligently and got good grades, it could prove to the university that film scoring is my life and I am willing to give everything I have to my craft.

And it was at that point that I began my great adventure.

On August 23, 2019, I flew to Boston to pursue my dreams.

My first year at Berklee has been the best experience of my life, but also a frantic race to transfer all my credits and test out of classes in order to save time and money. After passing all the exams, I was able to advance from the first year to the third within nine months. My rush to complete my classes was purely due to my financial situation.

Two weeks ago, I received an email from Berklee saying that I had been awarded one of the school’s largest scholarships. This meant that my next year of schooling would be much more affordable. What had been impossible until now, just became possible! But there’s still a little more to go and I need your help…

Why am I doing this Crowdfunding?

Right now, I am taking the summer semester. Although it was out of my budget, it was a step I had to take in order to advance in my studies and be able to complete the upper division courses. Because of the pandemic, tuition was lowered for the summer semester and it was a rare opportunity to save money.

Because I could only afford part of the tuition, the university agreed to loan me the rest under the condition that I take classes and agree to pay back the amount before July 31. Otherwise, I would not be allowed to enroll next year and would have to forfeit the scholarship I earned.

If I can get all the funds, I will be able to pay my debt to the school and continue studying. I will graduate early, in 1.5 years, and then hopefully go to Los Angeles to make my dream come true.

Mi nombre es Amanda, soy compositora de bandas sonoras, y esta es mi historia:

De la mano de mi madre a los cuatro años entré en mi primera escuela de música. 
Vivíamos lejos de la escuela a las afueras de la ciudad y cada mañana con el coche cruzábamos un bosque con niebla por un camino de tierra. Esa era la carretera donde mi madre nos ponía música a mi hermano y a mí, y creo que fue en ese punto donde una semilla empezó a germinar. A medida que avanzábamos ella nos contaba una de sus historias de guerreros entre la niebla y percusiones con violines húngaros convertían aquel viaje en una aventura única, su voz se acoplaba con la música y con el bosque. Era una película en vivo. Yo veía a los guerreros salir de la niebla al ritmo de los tambores.

Así se construyó mi infancia en una realidad paralela a la vida cotidiana y sin yo planearlo crecieron robustas raíces y se convirtieron en los cimientos de mi vida.
Cursé estudios de piano y composición musical, me encantaba crear melodías y escribir mis propias composiciones y tenía un sueño: crear música para películas.

En el momento en que me planteé estudiar en Berklee College of Music, era proponerme una meta imposible de alcanzar, sobretodo porqué estudiar en Estados Unidos tiene un coste muy elevado. Pero entonces poco a poco todo empezó a construirse y ha hacerse posible.

Después de trabajar duro y con mucho esfuerzo, fui acepta en Berklee y la misma universidad, me concedió una pequeña beca que me sirvió como un primer reconocimiento para tomar el primer paso, pensé que valía la pena hacer un sacrificio y pedí un préstamo en el banco, lo tomé como una inversión en mi futuro, como el que se compra una casa o un coche, pero en estudios. Y luego por sorpresa recibí un mail de la fundación SGAE, me habían concedido su beca más grande, la Beca Integral para la Creación de Música Clásica Actual, lo cual fue un milagro que no me esperaba.

A pesar de este conjunto de ayudas no era suficiente como para estudiar en Berklee toda una carrera, y realmente solo me llegaba para estudiar 1 año. Pero tenía que arriesgarme, había luchado demasiado como para rendirme, pensé que metiendo un pie en la universidad me serviría para abrir una puerta, incierta, pero con esperanza de que algo pasara. Pensé que si estudiaba muchísimo y sacaba buenas nota, me serviría para demostrar a los profesores y a la universidad que lo que quiero estudiar es mi vida y que estoy dispuesta a darlo todo.

Y fue en ese punto donde empecé la gran aventura.

El 23 de agosto de 2019 salía mi avión hacia el sueño de mi vida.

Mi primer año en Berklee ha sido la mejor experiencia de mi vida, pero también una carrera desenfrenada para convalidarme todas las clases posibles, a base de hacer exámenes,  para así, avanzar más rápido y poder ahorrarme tiempo y dinero. Me sentía como en un restaurante de lujo que me lo tenía que comer todo rápido para podérmelo terminar. Después de aprobar todos los exámenes, conseguí pasar del primer año al tercero, en nueve meses. Esa extraña prisa por convalidar no era otra cosa que el no tener dinero para hacer todas las asignaturas.

Hace dos semanas recibí un correo electrónico de la universidad, diciendo que me habían concedido una de las becas más grandes.
Esto significa que a partir del curso académico 2020-2021 el coste de mi matrícula será mucho más asequible. Lo. que había sido imposible hasta ahora, se ha convertido en posible. Pero necesito hacer el último empujón y esta vez necesito vuestra ayuda.

¿Por qué estoy haciendo este Crowdfunding?

En estos momentos estoy cursando el semestre de verano, que ya no entraba dentro de mi presupuesto, pero era esencial para poder avanzar en mis estudios y poder posicionarme en un curso más avanzado. La matrícula había sido rebajada debido a las circunstancias de la pandemia y era una oportunidad para ahorrar dinero.

Pero esto me ha hecho endeudarme con la universidad, ya que solo podía pagar una parte de la matrícula. La condición fue, tomar clases, a cambio de pagar el importe restante antes del 31 de Julio, por lo contrario, no podré matricularme el próximo curso y disfrutar de la beca que me han concedido.

Si puedo conseguir todos los fondos, podré pagar mi deuda, seguir estudiando, graduarme en 1 año y medio e irme a Los Ángeles a hacer realidad mi sueño.
