School attendance funds for Dr. Omari´s children

Our beloved colleague and friend, Dr. Omari Abdul Msemo, passed away recently, after a very short period of critical liver cancer. He was based at NIMR Korogwe Research Station in a rural setting of northeastern Tanzania, where he lived with his family. Through his research on anemia and malaria in pregnancy, and women’s and children’s health, he has made an important impact on developing research and knowledge in how to secure a healthier life for families living in low- and middle-income settings. We are committed to continuing the research projects we started together.

Omari was besides being an excellent physician, an amazing human being. He was the kind of person who always walked the extra mile, and never refused to help a patient, study participant or colleague even if there was just the slightest difference that he could make.

We miss him deeply, and cannot begin to imagine how hard his all too sudden death has affected his family. We are certain that there is nothing Omari would have wished for more than for his four children to be able to attend school and even later continue into college or university. Therefore, we, his colleagues in Tanzania and at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, have created this fundraising with the purpose to assist his widow, Mrs. Msemo in paying school attendance fees for their daughter and three sons (Malekela 16yrs, Wakae 14yrs, Masewa 10yrs, and Natujwa 4yrs old).

Attending secondary school (after 7th grade of primary school) is not free in Tanzania, and the below prices listed are average costs per child, per school term:

School registration and attendance fees: $440 / €400 / 3000DKK

School supplies and utensils (textbooks, paper, pencils): $38 / €35 / 260DKK
