Help Kana Stay Housed & Healthy!

Donation protected
Our long-time friend is currently facing an imminent eviction while also trying to recover from life-saving surgery and a COVID-19 infection. You can read the details of her situation - written entirely by her - below. We are looking to raise the six months of back rent she will have to pay when she goes to court in July, plus another month of rent to give her a buffer to find a new job, settle in there and get paid.

Please help us keep Kana housed! She has spent decades supporting others, and now she needs our help!

From Kana:

For those who don't know me, my name is Kana Neibert (she/her). I am a 44-year-old woman residing in Baltimore City, Maryland. I’ve actively served as a front-line community healthcare and human services worker since 2005, and spent every week during the pandemic taking care of patients in need.

I never imagined I would find myself writing an urgent request for community aid, though not for lack of living through many challenging struggles. Normally, I am the one helping others get what they need to not only survive whatever they're going through, but to live life in a way that feels empowering and genuine.

I try to live my life in an authentic and transparent manner, in the hopes that I can show others that the barriers that we sometimes hit, and the stigma we face can be torn down. No one should be forced to live in silence for fear of asking for help. If I am counseling other people to do that, I need to live that advice, too.

In January of this year, I had emergency life-saving partial foot amputation surgery. While hospitalized, I also contracted COVID - despite being vaccinated and boostered. Having just started a new job one week prior, I was ineligible for short term disability.

The day after I was released from the hospital, I applied for social services support and rental assistance with the Baltimore City Community Action Program (BCCAP). On multiple occasions, they stated their refusal to provide help until such time as my landlord filed for eviction.

In May, my landlord initiated the eviction process. I have now spent weeks trying to get a hold of someone in the BCCAP office, but no one answers the phones, and no one responds to emails.

On July 14th, I have to appear in court for my eviction case. I have been unable to secure any financial support. I will have to supply rental payments in full for February through July. If I fail to pay the debt, I will lose the home in which I have lived for almost 12 years.

I am terrified and angry about my situation. I am currently applying for work, but I still have medical restrictions. I am doing everything I possibly can to secure the money I need, which leads me to this moment, where I have to admit I need help and ask for it. I can’t imagine being without a home, or even attempting to complete a move with my foot in its current condition.

I sincerely appreciate everyone who took the time to read my story, and thank you so much to everyone who is able to contribute towards my fundraiser. I can’t survive this without my community.

Thank you so much to my long-time friends for supporting this endeavor, and reminding me it is okay to seek support. We will continue to provide updates.
