Surgery and Medical costs

Thank you for visiting our page.  Shannen Didyk needs our love and support. In June, she was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma which is a rare noncancerous brain tumor that develops on the main nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain.  As a single parent, Shannen is always upbeat and positive and tries to set a great example for her children. She is also a devoted and loving daughter, sister, cousin, niece, friend, and co-worker.

She is facing a two serious surgeries.  She had surgery on her right ear as a teenager that left her with profound hearing loss.  Her new doctor in San Diego wants to rebuild her damaged right ear in order to restore her hearing in that ear as she faces a total loss of hearing in the other ear with the tumor removal.  The first surgery is scheduled for next week and will involve replacing the damaged middle ear bones with prosthetic bones and adding a new eardrum in her right ear.  She will be out of work for at least two weeks with no pay during this time.

The surgery to remove the tumor on the left side is much more extensive and risky.  It will require a sizeable section of skull to be removed in order to access the tumor and gentle retraction of brain tissue in order to try not to damage facial nerves.  Her hearing nerve will be at high risk for damage because of where the tumor is.  Her balance nerve on that side will be removed causing extreme dizziness, and she will have to learn to compensate for balance and orientation.
In addition to the surgeries, she has already had one MRI and one CT scan at $1000 each which are not covered by insurance.  She will need at least three more scans and will have at least $7,000 in co-pays from the surgery.

This GoFundMe will help to ease the financial burden that Shannen will be left with, including costs associated with the surgery, travel and lodging in San Diego as she sees a world-renowned surgeon (she will need to stay put in San Diego for three days after the first surgery and for two weeks after the tumor surgery), multiple follow-up visits, and the loss of pay from being out of work for at least two months.  If the surgery destroys the hearing in her left ear, she will hopefully be fitted with a bone-conducting hearing aid that is only partially covered by insurance.

No amount is too small. She will be grateful for anything you can contribute – even if it is prayers.
