Hello, I'm Joe Beck. I've been homeless for a lot longer than I'd like to admit. I served in the military for seven years and honorably separated in pursuit of custody of my son. The military left me in a contractual corner where I couldn't really engage his mother who was/is keeping him from me. I have been up against this for quite some time as some of you may know.
I am in a different phase of this process of getting back on my feet than I have been for a while, learning of new obstacles while still fighting against the old ones. I have a job now, I work at a Waba Grill not to far away from here as I am trying to save to get a car to get me through times like these. (It is currently El Nino in California, raining for about a week) I struggle with keeping track of my posessions as I am not allowed where they are kept and can only carry what I can hold with my hands walking, or in a backpack. I mean, I have been playing guitar for almost sixteen years and can't even gig my way out of this situation because I need rides and all sorts of favors to get through. Its also winter so I can not street perform like I do in the warmer months of the year.
House hunting is a new portion of the picture. I know a lot of people arent familiar with how my benefits work having served in the military and been issued a housing voucher. This is even more difficult than before. I am still in competition with people who have cash money for their security deposits. This attempt at gofundme is to put enough cash in front of my voucher to land me in a home during these months of bad weather. My voucher expires in March! So Minimum wage isn't going to do what I need it to do in the time allotted. Thanks in advance and God Bless!
