This dorkus pup ran in front of my skis today. I tried to avoid hitting him, but failed, and the worst case scenario ensued. He stood up and could not bear any weight on his back left leg. When we examined him closer, we realized that I had sliced him good with my skis. My heart broke into a million pieces watching him struggle back to the car while still attempting to run and play with his sister. He seemed more confused and annoyed than he was in pain. He is usually very tough when it comes to injuries, so when we made it back to the car and he was still not bearing weight, I knew it was bad. I took him to the High Peaks Vet where they confirmed that I had severed his Achilles’ tendon. They recommended a specialist outside Burlington, VT because it’s a very tricky surgery with not the greatest success rate. These guys are the best and therefore it will cost quite a bit, but it’s his best chance at a full recovery. I did have the option to leave it and let it heal on it’s own, but I just can’t do that to the kid. He’s got at least another 7 years in him and he’s an active dog. He deserves the best shot at recovery. And so when they put the bill for $4500 in front of me, I signed it and began to pray that I could figure something out by the time I picked him up from surgery on Saturday. It feels pretty gross to ask for money, but I know there are a lot of people out there that love this pup to no end. Thank you so much for any little bit. I’ll try to keep everyone posted on how he’s doing. If surgery goes well, he’ll still have a long recovery ahead of him.
