Hello,
My name is Alisha Eklund. I was born deaf and have had a cochlear implant since I was 10 years old (had it for 14 years now). My cochlear implant has changed my life! It has improved my hearing greatly and therefore improved my communication with other people. I can hear much more than with hearing aids; for example, I can hear music, voices, city noises and more. The problem is some of the equipment parts for my cochlear implant processor are worn out, including the batteries. Unfortunately, they are very expensive to replace. Alberta Health Insurance does not cover it and AADL (Alberta Aids to Daily Living) cannot cover all of my medical needs either. It is challenging to find any financial assistance for it. I require the batteries and equipment to hear for my daily life, especially with my job in a restaurant’s kitchen. Without my cochlear implant processor, I am completely deaf, I cannot hear anything. It would be very difficult for me to communicate with others with lip reading alone, especially in the kitchen where everyone will be shouting out “hot”, “behind”, “sharp”.
I would like to add another thing, since I do not wear my cochlear implant at night, in bed, I must have signalers for the fire alarm, door bell and a baby crying. I would feel safe and comfortable to sleep at night if I had something to wake me up when the fire alarm goes off. I would like to be able to hear a baby crying when I am babysitting or when I have my own family soon.
I am asking for your help to please donate some money to help me to reach my goal to be able to buy this equipment for my disability. The cochlear implant processor equipment will be bought from the Global Hearing Aid Clinic and the signalers will be from Harris Communications. Please feel free to ask any questions! Please share this with your family and friends. I would like all the support I need. Thank you so much for your time, kindness and generosity.
Sincerely,
Alisha
