Dearest family and friends,
I am writing to you all on behalf of the very special organization that I am interning at called Mawulolo Youth Network (MYN). This GoFundMe page, message, and promotional video are all a part of a scholarship fundraising project I am spearheading on behalf of the children that MYN serves.
As most all of you know, I am currently studying abroad in Africa! I am living on campus in Accra at the University of Ghana, Legon and taking courses in West African Traditional Dance and Archaeology. At the end of this semester I will have completed my degrees in Dance and Cultural Anthropology from the University of California Santa Barbara, which is very exciting.
Aside from dancing and studying I have been keeping very busy. I am volunteering at the school’s vegetable garden, rehearsing and performing with a local dance company, exploring the city, taking weekend trips around Ghana, and interning at MYN.
MYN is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, dedicated to unearthing children’s talents and promoting youth education in the Christian Village community, Achimota, and surrounding towns. MYN is provides a formal extension of the students’ school day, with a nurturing environment to review schoolwork, continue learning, growing, asking questions, and feeling loved by a supportive staff of educators. MYN has an active page on Facebook under “Mawulolo Youth Network” and a website underway at this URL address: http://mawuloloyouthnetwork.org. The Facebook page is updated frequently with images and videos of the children, volunteers, interns, and programs, as well as information about the organization. Check it out and see if you can find me!
My responsibilities as an intern, on three afternoons per week, include teaching Mathematics and English to a class of 5th through 7th grade students, doing public relations, administrative work, and raising money for scholarships. I am reaching out to you in support of my scholarship fundraising project. Though MYN does not charge annual tuition, primary, junior high school, and high schools require payment of tuition that many of our students’ families cannot afford. I hope you will help me reach my goal to raise enough money to pay for each of my thirty-two students’ 2016/2017 school tuition – a total of $10, 004 US Dollars.
The total cost for students’ tuition includes their school fees, academic books and stationary, and school lunches for the year. For students enrolled in primary school the total cost comes out to $282 per student. For students attending junior high school this figure comes out to $352 per student. There are 32 total students in my class. 18 are going into primary school next year and 14 going into JHS next year.
While I realize the large size of this number, thinking about it in comparison to the experience that I am having in Ghana and everything that I am learning from these amazing children and this wonderful organization, it no longer seems so daunting. I realize how privileged I am for the top-notch education that I have received and thank you (again) to my parents for sacrificing all they did to make it possible for me, Ari and Jeremy to reap its benefits. Unfortunately the majority of the world is not so lucky. It is my goal to help the children I have had the blessed opportunity of teaching and learning from this semester by ensuring that each of them are able to continue in school next year. I am reaching out to all of you because I know how much you love and care for me, and thus what I love and care about. I hope you will consider contributing to further the education of my students. Every dollar truly helps.
Please enjoy the video that I made (with the help of my students) which provides a small window into this wonderful organization and the work I am so lucky to be a part of. The children I teach truly are remarkable souls who deserve to continue learning so that each one of their dreams can become a reality. Donations can be made straight to the GoFundMe account. I will be collecting funds until the start of their school term next September.
All my love and gratitude,
Rebecca Silberman
