My Lupus Journey
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Nwadiogbu Joy, and I am a 24-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria. In late August 2021, as I was in my final year at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Bullous Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus. This is an autoimmune disease where my body's own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. In my case, lupus has caused inflammation and damage to my skin, mouth, joints, and, most recently, my kidneys.
I am currently under the care of Prof. Olufemi Adelowo, head of the General Consultant of Rheumatology Department at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. My journey with lupus has been a strenuous one, filled with persistent pain and the frustration of slow recovery. This is largely due to insufficient funds, which have repeatedly forced breaks in my vital treatment plans, hindering my progress and well-being.
While there is no cure for lupus, it can be effectively managed with consistent treatment and necessary lifestyle adjustments. Unfortunately, the medications are very expensive, making ongoing management nearly impossible for my family. My family bears the primary physical and financial burden, and it has been an incredibly difficult struggle for us all.
Currently, my most urgent battle is against Lupus Nephritis, where my kidneys are being severely attacked. Without immediate and continuous treatment, I face the risk of dialysis and complete organ failure. I've begun chemotherapy, but I am unable to complete the crucial cycles due to a lack of funds.
I am reaching out with a heartfelt plea for financial aid to complete my treatment and finally achieve a sense of healing. This situation has created an immense burden on my family and me, especially impacting my mental health. My current condition prevents me from working, either physically or remotely. Any assistance you can provide would be a profound blessing and will not be taken for granted. Thank you and may God bless all those who contribute to my recovery.
