Hi my name is Mario, ever since I graduated with my B.B.A. in 1999 I wanted to pursue an M.B.A. and a J.D.. Of course, back then my professional aspirations were much different as they were egocentric in nature. Aspirations that were cut short almost twenty years ago by the tragedy of being falsely accused of murder, coupled with being wrongfully convicted for the same.

The energy and passion that would have led me to achieve my academic goals were instead devoted to the informal study of the law, for the purpose of filing my appeals in pursuit of exoneration and freedom. Nevertheless, my academic ambitions never actually died they were just put on hold.

Prison is a harsh world for many reasons, but it’s harsher still on academic dreams especially if you a life sentence. Policymakers, in their wisdom, don’t see the point in providing higher education to someone who will inevitably die in a cage. But that sadistic perspective and policy is being to shift, and while they certainly aren’t bringing college classrooms into prison—at least, not yet—they are at least not objecting to university programs offering independent study for advanced degrees.

The program I intend to pursue is through California Costal University. It’s an M.B.A. Program consisting of 34 credit hours and a thesis. The cost is $250.00 per credit hour and I hope to begin with 3 courses in the Spring semester (January 2024). I’m not eligible for grants or any other type of financial aid, other than your support. Currently I work 50-60 hours a week as the head cook, at a net wage of $0.85 per hour. I also write an online newsletter at mariochavez.substack.com, and promote my self published novels through my website www.mylifeplus25.com. Collective efforts that will help me to cover supplies, textbooks, and the application fee. Obviously, I believe in being self sufficient, but as of yet, my best efforts have not yielded the financial resources necessary to pursue this particular dream. Will you help me?
