Help Honor My Father's Final Wishes

Hello, my name is Levi Flaman, and I am reaching out for support to cover the funeral expenses of my father, Myles Douglas Flaman, who passed away on January 15th, 2025.

Dad was working in Jamaica over the winter when he passed away. Thankfully, his travel insurance helped cover some of the costs of bringing him home to Canada, and years ago, he prepaid for part of his funeral arrangements. However, that prepayment did not include several significant costs, such as:

While cremation would be a less expensive option, my father wished to be buried, and I want to honor his wishes as closely as possible.

Why I Need Help

At the moment, I am facing financial challenges. After graduating from the University of Alberta in 2023, I have been struggling to save money while repaying my student loans. Additionally, while I have been named sole executor and beneficiary in my father’s will, I cannot access any of his funds until I receive his death certificate from Jamaica—a process that, despite paying for expedited service, may still take weeks or even months.

Unfortunately, without that document, I cannot apply for probate or access his bank account to help cover the funeral costs. I also cannot rely on my tax refund yet, as I do not expect to receive my T4 from my employer until late February or early March.

Because of these financial and legal delays, I am in urgent need of support to cover my father’s funeral expenses.

How You Can Help

I have tentatively scheduled his funeral service for February 21st, as that is the last weekday of the winter semester Reading Week at my university—making it the most feasible time for me to travel to Saskatchewan without interfering with my academic responsibilities.
