Mykaela Jane is a beautiful 13 year old girl, with the brightest smile for miles, strength of a warrior and has the biggest heart you could imagine!!! When she was a baby she was diagnosed with Bi-Lateral Schizencephaly and has gone through more than any adult could ever imagine!! I’m not sure she even know this, but she holds a very special place in my heart.
Since the day she was born I’ve seen this precious and beautiful girl grow, especially with such great strength and positivity. You see, my hardest day will never compare to anything she goes through on one of her easiest days. She has gone through so many surgeries and every time she comes out stronger than she went going in. She may not know how much I admire the warrior in her, but let me tell you there’s not a day that I don’t forget how blessed I am to get out of bed to be able and do the things I can.
Before I get into the topic, let me tell you a little about Mykaela’s mom, her name is Marisa. At the age of 4, she lost her momma my mother’s sister, Sylvia to a battle with Ovarian cancer. (You can see where Mykaela gets her strength from.) My cousin has had it a little tougher than most, but you will not for one second ever see her complain how hard she has had it. Why you may ask, because growing up without her momma was hard and she knows her daughter along with her two younger children. And she will give her all making sure all their needs are met.
Which now brings me to the topic. Recently, Marisa and I were discussing Mykaela’s health and she explained how she was needing another surgery. However, through the years I’ve seen my cousin get denied from time after time from medical insurances to cover the cost of surgery. There are certain stipulations as to what is covered and what cannot be. Well presently Mykaela is needing another surgery, because she has severe Scoliosis. If you’ve never been around her when the pain suddenly occurs, it can be sometimes unbearable for Mykaela to get through. Marisa and Mykaela’s dad Chris are so good with her, they try their best to do all they can to help give her any relief. However, this only does so much and ultimately the surgery is what will help her with the pain as she spends a good amount of her time in her wheelchair.
It broke my heart to hear yet again, she was denied the surgery. I knew they were all so excited and getting prepared for the surgery to happen only to be given the bad news. I wanted to help any way I could. The surgery alone for her 7-12 day stay is going to cost near $200,000, and insurance will cover a portion, but denied the other they are still forced to cough up the rest. Which can be anywhere from from $5,000 - $50,000.
I’ve seen the good people spread in this world and the helping hands they are always willing to lend to those in times of need. So here I am, asking to please help from that giving and loving place in your heart, with Mykaela’s surgery she so greatly needs and can receive!!!
