My Sustainable Farm Internship
Hello there! My name is Robert Vargas and I am a senior at the University of Scranton. I am currently studying Environmental Science.
The reason I come to you is because I need help to raise money for potentially a life-changing internship. I am going to be completely honest, I was diagnosed with depression about a year ago. Ever since then I have been struggling to not only keep up with coursework, but also have been struggling to hold on to life. I have seen depths of despair I wouldn't wish even on my enemies. I have been in recovery and have been seeing some really great professionals who have helped me get on the right medication and the correct therapy. I have been feeling more energetic and motivated lately.
Because of my major depression, I had to go on medical leave from classes this semester. On the bright side, this has opened up an opportunity for me that I have been hoping would become realized. I want to work on a farm! I believe that one of the largest hurdles humanity faces on this planet is access to fresh food, particularly the impoverished citizens in urban environments. I want to learn to appreciate where our food somes from, and develop ways to bring fresh, sustainably grown food into our cities. I believe that it is my purpose as a citizen in the United States of America to help this country limit our environmental impact. One way to do this is to grow our food sustainably. Our current conventional agriculture system harms the environment through its enormous usage of water, artificial fertilizers, and potentially harmful pesticides. I believe we need a revolution not only politically in this country, but also ethically. We must develop a proper land ethic if we are ever to live harmoniously with the environment.
I have already applied to 22 different farms in Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, and Colorado. I have already gotten a couple replies and interviews. The money that I am raising will mostly go directly into my gas tank so I can make it to the farms I am applying to on the West Coast. I would need this money by April 1st. About $400 will go towards gas, the remainder I will use buying work clothes, tires for my car, and towards bills so I don't leave my roommate with any bill debt! I am not asking for too much, but even this amount of money would be life-changing for me. So please, if you have anything to spare, I would be most grateful. This experience will not only teach me a lot about agriculture, but will also grow me as an individual and show me how important life is. I want to live and thrive, and I have a lot of good ideas for the future. I don't want a lack of money to hold me back from following my purpose on this planet: to help the average citizen gain access to sustainable materials and food, in order to protect and cultivate the planet. Please, even $1 would go a long way!
Thank you so much for any donations in advance. Feel free to contact me for any more information! I would be glad to have a nice conversation with anyone interested. Thank you again! Here is a picture of my family:
