Hello,
My name is Amie Davidson, and Damon Condren is my stepdad... or who I like to call, my "stepped-up," dad. If you don't already know, my mom, Becky, and Damon are completely "twitterpated" in love. It took so long for them to find each other, and they both are amazing, loving, and selfless people. They deserve nothing but happiness.
They say, "Bad things happen to good people," and unfortunately, it's true.
Tuesday, November 23, 2021, my mom, and Damon had just begun hanging Christmas lights. They had the ladder against the garage and Damon was on it-- about four feet off the ground. In a flash, Damon fell and hit the back of his head on the corner of the bricks on the outside of their home.
Immediately Damon began seizing and bleeding profusely from his head.
My mom immediately went to his side and called 911. She was yelling for help and luckily a neighbor (whom they had never met), rushed over. After telling the neighbor she couldn't get through to 911, the neighbor ran to her house, grabbed her phone, gloves and towels. Damon had stopped breathing and suddenly gasped for air.
The neighbor, while holding towels on Damon's head to slow the bleeding, and my mom, both waited over five minutes before 911 even answered.
Forever passed and Damon and my mom were on their way, via ambulance to the city's best trauma unit, despite two other hospitals near-by. (That was a good thing... but also terrifying.)
Paramedics asked Damon when he regained consciousness, what his name was, what holiday was later that week and who "that lady is," meaning my mom. Damon had a blank stare. He kindly and politely, in true Damon style, asked the paramedics to "please" take off the neck brace they placed on him. Quite literally bleeding to death from major head trauma, and still saying, "please."
The prayer chains started immediately. From state to state and all around the world. Thank you to all of you who prayed and are continuing to pray!
Once they cleared Damon's spine, he immediately went into emergency brain surgery that lasted approximately three hours. When his surgeon came out, she said surgery went well, he was stable and was going to wake up. Praise God! She then stated, "He lost a lot of blood."
Damon fractured his skull in three places. The surgery removed a large hematoma (bruise-type clot) from the outside of his brain and placed a "stent" to relieve pressure. He has 48 staples on the back of his head from the injury and surgery. They had to give him two blood transfusions. He was intubated and was sedated still. Within Damon's brain are many, smaller bleeds throughout.
When Damon woke, he was asked what his pain level was on the 1-10 pain scale. His response, "22." They asked Damon to give a thumbs up, he barely moved his arm. They asked him to wiggle his toes... he couldn't.
His pain is the most difficult to see Damon have. And it continues to torture him. He has lost a tremendous amount of weight, as medications he was taking for pain and the brain injury itself, made him sick. Vomiting caused even more pain to his head and throat after being intubated.
Eleven days since the accident and Damon's progress is nothing less than miraculous.
Damon now has most memories up to the accident. He knows my mom!! He/they are still... almost annoyingly, overly in-love.
He has graduated from liquids to purees and now on solids. He has physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. He has graduated two levels of ICU and moved to a rehab floor. He has been going on short walks around the hospital floor and telling people how he and my mom met and fell in love and sings to my mom. (Like I said, annoyingly in-love.) My mom is not going to leave Damon's side. She is in ICU as much as allowed. He can have one visitor, per DAY, from 8 am to 8 pm. She gets at the hospital at 7:45 am and leaves when they kick her out.
Damon continues to have short-term memory loss. A lot of pain. A LOT of pain. He is still Damon... using his wit and sarcasm and he and I are texting our normal banter.
Many have asked how to help. Prayer is the number one request. But I have one more...
Being Damon, he is already worrying and stressing about the road ahead of him... which is long. Instead of primarily being focused on his road to recovery with physical, emotional, and mental improvement, he is distracted by the financial burden of this accident.
I do not want my mom and Damon to have this financial stress during this time they need to focus on healing. Any help you can provide will be extremely appreciated and will go 100% to Damon's medical bills. The average DAY in ICU costs anywhere between $10 to $16k. It's now day 11 in the hospital...
We love and appreciate all your prayers and know they're being heard. The power of prayer has gotten Damon where he is now.
I will include updates through the journey of his healing.
Thank you all so very much,
Amie
