My wife Natalie suffers from a gradually progressive nerve disorder called myasthenia gravis. Just over a year ago she underwent a major, open rib cage surgery (thymectomy) that put her MG into a form of remission, but we have since learned from her neuro-specialist that such a surgery can have some major side effects. One of these side effects is ferocious pain and occasional numbness in her extremities. This can, and has recently, cause her to be unable to move about or stand for periods if time.
This means that, as that she is a full time cake decorator, she is unable to perform her duties at work. Her job, sadly, does not offer sick time or paid days off; if you can't work, you don't get paid.
As a professional in the game industry I myself don't get offered Health Insurance, and we have been paying unconscionably high monthly insurance rates so she can go to her specialist, get her needed medication, and sadly take 2 Emergency Room trips in the last year when "attacks" occur. It is scary as hell, and extremely expensive.
We have been doing alright, but a recent hiccup in my steady income (when combined with her medical inability to get to work) has made the last portion of her medical bills go to collections and begin to take its toll on our household.
We have tried going to Social Services, but Indiana has some very strict laws concerning what is and isn't a disability... meaning the government programs for this sort of thing are no help.
I have seen others in my industry fall on hard times and need to reach out to their fans, friends, and family; I have helped where I could. Now, it seems, we look to the universe to see what, if any, aid we can gather. My new freelance wages can pay our day to day and keep our family fed and warm, but the numbers keep growing and the tunnel that has that light at the end... well, it feels like it is just getting longer and longer.
I want to be able to pay all of this back medical debt, but the life of a game industry professional is more than a little check-to-check, and as a husband and father... I'm not too proud to know when I need help.
Thanks for reading all of this, and even if you can't or won't help us in this rough patch... please share the link and spread the word.
Thanks again.
