My mother's cancer surgery

Donation protected
My mother has cancer. The frightful phrase we all dread, the horror so many of us live through. We all hope the moment is far away – not until she’s 80, not until she’s 70, not until she’s 60…

My mother is 48. She is a piano teacher. She inspires hundreds of children – expands their horizons, enriches their lives, introduces them to the bewitching world of music. “She is inspiring” – that’s how all who know her describe her – with a uniquely clear vision and tender love for beauty, and with a talent for bringing it to others.

My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 gastric (stomach) cancer, adenocarcinoma, in May, but she probably had it for years. It has no symptoms. It creeps up on you, you live with it, not knowing that you have it. It does not get detected early. My mother kept getting sick with different things over the past several years –she got treatment for them, but none of us, family or doctors, made the connection that her cancer had already crippled her immune system. We found out that it’s cancer suddenly and unexpectedly. The doctors looked at her – a young, relatively healthy woman who ate well, exercised, did not feel sick – and told her that the cancer can no longer be operated on in Canada, that it is too advanced, that it is terminal and palliative treatment is the only option.

We couldn’t believe it. We sent out requests for second opinions in Canada and abroad. We found options. Many surgeons in Europe and Israel, where this cancer is more common, believe the cancer is resectable – can still be treated with surgery. We have selected the hospital, and will be pursuing surgical treatment in Munich, Germany in September this year.

My parents are immigrants. They came to Canada when they were 30, building a life from the ground up, initially working minimum wage jobs while my father attended grad school, slowly establishing their place. They haven’t had enough time to build up savings for a private surgery in Germany, which costs in excess of $100,000. We will make use of all credit capacity available to us and all the resources we can access, but it may not be enough. We ask for your help. Without surgery there is no hope.

Please help us to give my mother more years, so that she has a chance to experience life. Meet her grandchildren. Grow old, retire. Experience the things that we all have on our bucket lists, and the time that we expect life will give us.

We are deeply grateful for any contributions.

For additional clarity, I am Yevgeniya Huggins of Toronto, Canada, and I am raising money for my mother. All proceeds will be directed towards payment for her surgery in Munich. Funds will be withdrawn from the campaign, and transferred to my father, who will then transfer them to the hospital.
