THE MIKE SCHERWITZ MEMORIAL FUND
Donation protected
Mike Scherwitz was a father, friend, brother, son. And while the same can be said for many people, there was no one else like Mike. He was the very definition of enthusiasm, optimism, delight, and vigor. He lived with gusto.
Mike's daughters were the love of his life. The joy and adoration between him and his girls was palpable, even over something as impersonal as social media. As many know, Mike spent his life savings and incurred a substantial amount of debt during his fight to maintain full custody of them. Remaining a central part of their lives was paramount to him.
On September 19, Mike Scherwitz died of a sudden heart attack. His family is now trying to navigate the logistical, financial, and legal issues that always follow the loss of any loved one. They have immediate needs, such as food, gas, and attorney costs while they stay in North Carolina. They have funeral home costs and, on top of that all, they must address the personal debt Mike incurred as he fought tirelessly to maintain full custody of his girls.
But what they also have is an extended family of military brats and friends around the world who loved Mike Scherwitz, and who want to help.
The purpose of this GoFundMe campaign is to rally that extended family around his parents, siblings, and daughters, to help ease their emotional and financial burden during this time of deepest shock and grief.
It won't pay for everything. But it's a step we take in the name of community, of solidarity, and of support. Rather than having several loose threads of random gift card donations that may be hard to use, access, or find, this campaign is consolidating funds to help defray all the small and large costs Mike's family will be facing in the next few days and months. If there is anything of these funds left over after the initial needs are met, that money will be placed in an educational fund for Mike's girls.
We are heartbroken together. But we also stand together, and we can act together in love and support of Mike's family. If it is within your means, please give whatever you can. And please share the link so others might give as well. Thank you.
Mike, we miss you. May our hearts remember you each time we behold a stunning view, experience the wonder of nature, or reframe our thoughts to be more optimistic. Rest in peace.
