My name is Marie Francia Sterlin. I’m a Haitian classical and jazz singer, and today I’m reaching out with hope in my heart, asking for your support during a very important moment in my journey.

In 2023, I was accepted to study music at the University of Ottawa. It was a huge step forward for me, a chance to continue my musical education after years of performing, teaching, and sharing my voice across the Caribbean. I’ve spent my life singing, learning, and passing on what I’ve received, especially to young people. Music, for me, is more than a passion. It’s a way of creating connection, healing, and identity.

Because of visa delays, I wasn’t able to begin my studies right away. I had to wait an entire year and finally started in September 2024. Getting here was not easy. Between the time lost and the expenses of moving and settling in as an international student, my financial situation became very difficult.

Right now, I have an unpaid balance at the university, and I’ve been told that if I can’t pay it soon, I won’t be able to continue my studies or access important academic documents. After all the work it took to get here, I’m doing everything I can not to lose this opportunity.

That’s why I’m turning to you today. If you feel moved to support me, even with a small contribution, it would mean the world. Your help wouldn’t just be helping me pay a bill, it would be helping me continue a path I’ve worked so hard to build, a path rooted in music, culture, and education.

In addition to my studies, I am also committed to promoting Caribbean music around the world. I’m part of a regional music ensemble created by UNESCO through the Transcultura Program, where I help represent the rich musical traditions of our region internationally. It’s a mission that matters deeply to me, to make sure our voices are heard and our culture honored.

I truly believe in the power of music to change lives. I’ve seen it, I’ve lived it, and I want to keep sharing that power wherever I go.
