Riding for Hope – 38 Miles Around Glasgow with Sir Chris Hoy

Hi, It's Phil Bradshaw — and I’d love your help to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

On Sunday 7th September 2025, I’ll be cycling 38 miles around Glasgow, starting and finishing at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. This is part of the Tour De 4 event, organised by Sir Chris Hoy himself, to raise funds for cancer charities and highlight the reality of a cancer diagnosis — especially a terminal one.

Why I’m Riding

In June 2021, at the age of 68, I was diagnosed with Stage 4B EGFR lung cancer with an L858R mutation. The cancer had already spread to both lungs and my brain.

The diagnosis hit hard. I had spent almost 50 years as a qualified nurse, including time as a Senior Lecturer teaching nursing in universities — often on topics such as Palliative and End of Life Care. I thought I was prepared for anything… but nothing prepares you for hearing those words about yourself. I was told I could expect to live for 15 to 17 months .

I’d also lived a healthy, active life — never smoked, drank only occasionally, ate well, and kept fit. From running marathons in the 1980s to climbing Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro in 1995, to serving 20 years in the Army Reserves (including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan), physical fitness has always been part of who I am.

Living Life to the Full

Like Sir Chris Hoy, my diagnosis is terminal — but I’m determined to show that life still continues and it’s worth living to the full.

This ride is my way of proving that, no matter the obstacles, we can keep moving forward, stay positive, and embrace every day. At 72 years old, I’m aiming to cross that finish line with a smile.
