I'm raising money for Leukaemia UK. It a cause that's close to my heart after my big sister, Gemma, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in 2003. Unfortunately, Gemma lost her battle with ALL in 2005. Her loss has spurred me on to study, research, develop new research tools, set-up new clinical trials and develop new drugs to treat cancer over the last 20 years. In so many ways, Gemma has and will always be my inspiration.
I signed up for the "Tour de 4" 56 mile ride this year when I was fit and healthy. This isn't the case ATM (as of May 2025). I recently crashed my bike while descending down a Spanish mountain and I was admitted to hospital 2 days later. My medical team discovered that I had multiple broken ribs as well as a collapsed lung, and I had to have emergency surgery that night. Fortunately, Emily was by my side during my recovery and I was discharged a week later. We then had to make the long trip home from Granada to Cambridge by train as I wasn't allowed to fly. My recovery to full fitness will take far longer than our train journey home.
I'll now be using the Tour de 4 ride in September as milestone to slowly train for this summer when I'm allowed/able to ride my bike again.
Any contribution that you can make will have an impact. Anything helps.
Thank you for your support, David
