Last year, my husband Huw rode the Tour de 4 while living with a stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis. He was a great cyclist and had taken part in many triathlons over the years, including a half Ironman in Switzerland. Even with so much uncertainty ahead of him, he wanted to do something positive with the time he had. That choice, to keep going, has stayed with me.
Huw died earlier this year.
We would have been together for 13 years this year. We were married last summer, and we have a beautiful little boy, Idris, who is now one. I see so much of Huw in him already. I was pregnant when Huw was first diagnosed - we found out just a day before my 20-week scan. Living alongside someone through this illness, and then losing them to it, changes you. It leaves a lot of grief, and a feeling that things shouldn’t be this hard for families facing this diagnosis.
The Tour de 4 is a cycling event launched by Sir Chris Hoy following his own stage 4 cancer diagnosis. It brings together people living with stage 4 cancer, alongside friends, families and supporters, to raise vital funds. The event is about showing that a diagnosis does not define a person, and highlighting what life with stage 4 cancer can look like - strength, resilience and determination. That message mattered deeply to Huw, and it still does to me.
Cholangiocarcinoma is rare, aggressive, and often diagnosed too late. Many families are left with few options and very little time. AMMF exists to change that - by improving awareness, supporting research, and helping families who find themselves here.
This September, it's my turn and I'm taking part in the Tour de 4 in Huw’s memory, and for everyone affected by stage 4 cancer. I’m not a cyclist like Huw was, but I’m learning, training, and finding my way into it - and that feels important too. I will be joined by Huw's dad and sister, and some of our friends.
Training is tough, and grief is part of every day now - but I’m also finding moments where I enjoy the training, even when I didn’t expect to. Riding gives me space to think about Huw, and something to hold onto for Idris. It doesn’t fix what we’ve lost, but it helps to keep me going, and it feels like a way of honouring Huw while trying to turn some of this loss into something that might help others.
If you’ve already donated, thank you - your kindness and support truly mean more than I can say.
If you’re able to donate, thank you so much, and if you’re not, sharing this page or taking a moment to learn more about cholangiocarcinoma also really matters.
Thank you
