Over the years I have given as much as I could to individuals and organizations that were important to me. I have given money, time, knowledge, skills, and emotional support. I have done this because I believe in the power of community. I believe that when we have, we give, and doing so makes the world a better place for all of us. I don't find it nearly so easy to ask for help as I do to give it, but it's my time of need, so I'm making the request.
Facing my dental issues is a really hard thing for me to do. I have dental PTSD and extreme phobia of dentists. Did you know that there's research showing a direct relationship between mental health challenges and dental health issues? I'm an unfortunate byproduct of that. I've worked hard to get my mental health in a good place over the years. I am grateful to now be in a place to finally deal with these teeth issues, even though doing so is terrifying, painful, and expensive.
The estimated total cost of the required care is $26000. It's for root canals (to get out of immediate pain), crowns, replacement of several cracked fillings, gum surgery and deep cleaning. On top of the actual bill, I'll have some unpaid downtime from work during recovery.
I've found a wonderful dentist who offers sedation dentistry and is skilled in working with people who have trauma/phobias. She's very knowledgable about the relationship between mental health and dental health, which has affected me in numerous ways over the years. I'm excited to be able to work with her to finally get the care I need. But I have to find a way to pay for it.
Every little bit helps. The money helps practically, of course. More than that, I've realized that each contribution truly helps me feel supported by my community. It helps me feel less alone, and it makes me feel like I'm going to come through this.
I'm good with my money. I've supported myself as a freelancer in San Francisco for 13 years. I've got some emergency fund money. And I've got access to credit cards. But this is a huge chunk of change, and I need some help to cover it. If you can help at all, I appreciate it. If you can't help, I get it - but if you could spread the word and let others know who might be able to help then that's appreciated too.
