Before reading, I want to preface that these are not just my cats, but my babies. They have gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life, and I would do anything for them. If anything were to happen to either one of them I would be heartbroken, and so would they because they would be left without their sibling. ❤️
I noticed Bubby frequently going to his litter box, as often as 5 times within a 30-minute span. I watched him over the course of a few hours and realized he wasn’t able to go to the bathroom, despite trying multiple times. After noticing this, I took him to the emergency vet clinic, where I found out he had crystals in his urine making it difficult and painful for him to go to the bathroom. When the crystals appear in their urine (most common in male cats), it can lead to a blockage which is very serious, and if left untreated can be fatal within 24-48 hours and cause kidney failure. To avoid the blockage from happening, he now will have to be on a special prescription diet for the rest of his life. I’m monitoring him for the next 3-4 days, including monitoring his bathroom patterns. If he still isn’t able to go within 12 hours (less now), we will have to take him back to the vet. He’s currently on medicine to help with the pain, and also to keep him calm. (Believe me, it’s difficult for me to get this dude to take it. He’s not even falling for the wet food.) To make it worse, I had to separate him from his sister, Zella. They have never been apart from each other for even 10 hours since they were born. My heart is breaking, but I’m hoping the medicine and food will help to break down the crystals in his urine and avoid the blockage altogether and anything else from happening in the future. I’ve always open-fed them together; they free eat whenever they like, which means most likely they will both have to eat this food now.
