My student's family's car and house were burned down on Saturday, February 29. Emily is an extraordinarily kind, caring and hardworking senior at Oakland High School. She lives with her grandma, mother, and younger brother.
Funds will be allocated towards the following:
-3 months of rent, $2000/mo: $6000
-Replacement of essential home goods: $2000
-New car: $2000

Thankfully they are all safe but nearly all of their belongings were lost in the incident. They lived in low income housing and the mother is unable to work due to issues with her vision that require surgery to fix. Her mother is an immigrant and does not have a support system to rely on. They have very little in terms of savings.

Emily's family has a week (until March 7th) to live in a hotel room that has been provided by the Oakland Housing Authority but afterwards, they are unsure that low income housing will be able to provide them with a new home. In the event that housing does not provide a new home for them (which is very likely), this money will be going towards rent-- which is approximately about $2000/mo for a single unit in Oakland.
Not only do they not have a home but they also have to start over in accumulating basic necessities such as clothing, toiletries, cook ware, etc.

Emily is an amazing girl and she has such a bright future. Her mother is facing incredibly difficult odds but has expressed to me that she knows her family will move past this tragedy and is determined to do so. Any help you can offer is much appreciated for their future. Thank you!
