On New Year’s Day, our family experienced a devastating loss when my brother, mom, and dad lost their home in a house fire. In a matter of moments, everything they owned, their home, memories, and sense of safety was gone.

This tragedy is especially heartbreaking given the serious health challenges already being faced. My mom is living with kidney disease and relies on oxygen daily, and the stress following the fire has made an already fragile situation even more difficult. At the time of the fire, a family friend was also in the home, he was hospitalized and has only recently come out of an induced coma. Adding to the grief, my family also lost their beloved cat Bootzy in the fire. Bootzy was a steady companion and a cherished member of the family.
