Hi, I’m Stella and I am studying a BSc degree in Paramedic Science at Bournemouth University. In the summer of 2026 I am set to travel to Kandy, Sri Lanka for an elective medical placement hosted by WorkTheWorld. This will aid my current studies and enable me to experience emergency medicine in a less developed country than the one I am attaining my qualification in.
As part of my University course I will complete over 1500 hours of mixed frontline ambulance and specialist placements following a mentor within the NHS. I would love to work in new environments and within a different healthcare system to broaden my working practice and skillset.
WorkTheWorld are an award winning placement provider who sustain fair and ethical relationships with select partnership hospitals to allow integration between local staff and students/graduates. I chose Kandy, Sri Lanka as I would love to immerse myself within their welcoming culture and travel further abroad to a destination with differing healthcare so to gain the most beneficial experience during this elective.
While in Sri Lanka I will undoubtedly be exposed to different challenges within their healthcare system set-up; this can include their lack of developed primary care systems or mobile emergency care facilities. Therefore, I will be able to learn new processes of treatments and develop new triaging techniques in difficult circumstances and varying situations. This will help me to become more adaptable when providing medical treatment to those in need.
I will not be going alone… one of my very close friends Kirsty will also be embarking on this elective placement. We are current course mates and are both really excited for this opportunity.
Why should you help me?
I am going to be completing this placement outside of University term time, therefore it comes with added costs. Meaning this elective wouldn't be possible without fundraising. WorkTheWorld is a safe provider who reinvests profits into partnership hospitals in developing countries.
I will be paying an amount to WorkTheWorld in order to complete this placement and below is a break down of the additional costs I will need to self-fund:
Flights: £1000
Visa: £50
Travel vaccinations: ~ £50
PPE & uniform ~£50
If you would like to help me complete this elective placement by donating, any amount will help and I would be very grateful! My goal to fundraise is £1000 and any additional contributions will go directly back into the hospitals and providers that I will be working with.
Thank you in advance to everyone who helps to support me!
Stella x
