** N.B. There are some pictures below which show wounds **
Hi, I'm Sura and I'm fundraising to support my friend Tarik (who I know personally) to receive the medical treatment and attention he desperately needs. Here's Tarik's story in his own words:
My name is Tarik Atef Saadah.
I am 36 year old Palestinian and hold a Jordanian passport. I was born and raised in Damascus, Syria. In 2006, when I was 17 years old, I contracted a chronic illness: autoimmune hepatitis and blood poisoning. I remained ill until 2011. The doctor told me that the illness could return.
My family and I had to leave in 2012 after the war broke out and the security situation got worse. My family (which includes my father who is partially paralysed from a stroke, my mother and my 5 siblings) travelled to Jordan. I stayed there until 2018 and then I traveled to Turkey to work.
In 2023, my left shoulder suddenly stopped moving, then I started to develop sores on my body in the abdominal area, my right wrist and right leg from behind. I also suffered a fracture in the metatarsal bone of my left foot. However, there was no swelling and the pain was minor. Upon examination, it was found that I had erosion in the foot bone, bone fragility, deformation, and inflammation in the bone marrow. Due to this, I was no longer able to work (something that my family relied on as I used to send them money each month) and because of this I was unable to pay for the medical treatment I needed in Turkey.
I returned to Jordan in February 2025 as I could no longer survive in Turkey and needed to get medical treatment for my condition. I thought this would be easier in Jordan as I was a Jordanian citizen but it's been a very challenging experience. I have spent seven months lying in bed, suffering from pain in my shoulder and foot. I've been to the government hospitals but each time get given different appointments and told to come back in a month or two and have not been given any specific treatment to help me walk and recover. Doctors have told me that I cannot put pressure on my legs due to the weakness of the bone - this has left me unable to move much without crutches and I am unable to work.
Some people have told me that I need to be admitted to the hospital to be treated but I'm not being admitted because I need to pay money which I can't afford. Doctors haven't diagnosed my illness specifically. Some said I had an immune problem, and others said I had a liver problem. I just don't know what is happening with me and what's causing all these problems.
So it has been like this since February. There has been no progress. I cannot afford treatment on my own because I am not working and my family's financial situation is not good.
I am extremely grateful for any support you can provide that will help me to raise the funds that I need to get the proper medical treatment once and for all and to help me recover so that I can work and go back to being a help and not a burden on my family.
