My Next Step Towards Greater Independence: My Stem Cell Therapy Journey

Hi everyone, my name is Katie.

This past October, my life changed forever after a catastrophic diving accident that left me with a spinal cord injury and paralysis from the chest down.

What was supposed to be a girls’ getaway to celebrate my 28th birthday in the Dominican Republic turned into a life-altering medical emergency in a matter of seconds.

I remember lying in a foreign hospital realizing I couldn’t move my arms or legs and wondering what my future would look like.

In that moment, everything felt uncertain. My life as I knew it had completely changed.

Before the accident, I was fiercely independent. I worked as a nurse, caring for others and dedicating my life to helping people during some of the most vulnerable moments of theirs. Overnight, my roles reversed. Suddenly, I needed help with even the simplest things — getting out of bed, getting dressed, and navigating daily life.

But in the middle of fear and uncertainty, something extraordinary happened.

My community showed up.

Friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, and even complete strangers came together to help raise the funds needed to get me safely home to the United States. Because of your generosity, I was able to return home and begin my recovery surrounded by love and support.

I will never be able to fully express how grateful I am. Your kindness during the darkest moment of my life humbled me in ways I cannot describe. You reminded me that even in tragedy, there is incredible goodness in this world.

This injury changed my life, but it did not take away my determination.

Today, I am asking for your support again — not just to survive, but for the chance to regain pieces of my independence and improve my quality of life.

I have been given the opportunity to pursue stem cell therapy, one of the most promising areas of regenerative medicine for spinal cord injuries.

Stem cells are often called the body’s “repair cells.” Researchers believe they may help support damaged nerve cells, reduce inflammation, and potentially help restore some communication between the brain and the body after spinal cord injuries. Over the last decade, early studies have shown encouraging results, with some individuals experiencing improvements in strength, movement, and sensation.

While stem cell therapy is not a guaranteed cure and research is still evolving, even small improvements could profoundly change my daily life.

For me, greater independence is deeply personal.

It looks like being able to make my own cup of coffee in the morning.

Brushing my own hair.

Putting on my jewelry.

Adjusting myself in bed.

Moving my fingers and toes.

Standing with assistance.

And maybe one day, walking down the aisle to my future husband.

These may seem like small things to some people, but to me they would mean everything.

Losing my independence has been one of the most humbling parts of this journey, but I remain hopeful and determined to fight for every opportunity to improve.

Unfortunately, advanced regenerative treatments like stem cell therapy are extremely expensive and are not covered by insurance. The funds raised will help cover treatment costs, travel, lodging, and the rehabilitation needed afterward to give me the best chance possible at progress.

If you feel moved to donate, share my story, or simply keep me in your prayers, please know it means more than I could ever express.

You helped bring me home when I needed it most.

Now I am asking for help to take the next step forward — toward healing, toward independence, and toward hope.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me and supporting me on this journey.
