My name is Wes Pine. I am an independent Hairstylist in San Francisco where we are under "shelter in place" orders. Unfortunately that means I can't work and my income has completely halted for at least a month. I have struggled and survived financially for years despite the odds stacked against me. My apartment rent and rent for my salon chair total over $4650 a month. The larger portion of that number goes to renting a chair to work in San Francisco. Basic bills along with rent I am looking at $7000 a month.

I live in San Francisco, one of the most expensive cities in the US. To be able to continue to work and live in this city or the bay area I have to be able to meet my costs of living. Today Gov Newsom said that shelter in place could last until early June. I'm already struggling to make it to the end of this first mandate which is almost another two weeks to go. I'm very scared for my future and I want to be here for my friends, family and community when this ends and not in the poverty line relying on government checks. I'm sure that my finances can not sustain this kind of hit and am asking for your help.

The last few years have been filled with a lot of struggles. Dealing with a divorce to the closing of my salon. I found myself 15yrs into my career and down over 60% in services not even a year after I closed my salon. It was frightening and hard to digest. A year ago I began working at Studio Hix Salon with the hopes of rebuilding. A month after I started my Mom went into the hospital and was there for 32 days dealing with a degenerative lung disease. I can’t see my mother with the current state of the corona virus. I don’t know if I’m a carrier and not showing symptoms. I have to wait until testing becomes available before I can see her. Along with the passing of our family dog Lola last year was a cycle of start and stop having to take time off and filled with finical burdens related to my moms health.

Shelter in place hits at a time where I am already two months behind on rent. I am doing the best I can to do my part. As I isolate alone in my apartment with weeks still to go one can’t help but constantly feel like you are staring your future right in the eye and it is one step away from poverty and being homeless. I’ve never wanted a handout nor asked for one before. It’s a hard thing to do.

I love my job. I want to be here for family, friends and clients to help them back on there feet and into a more normal routine. Hair is an essential part of the process of returning to work and returning to normal.

If we can get at least 1,000 people to donate even just $10 , that will cover my rent at home, my rent at the salon and basic expenses for the next 2 months! I am putting the goal amount higher than basic expenses because so much is unknown at this point. I may have lost some battles but I'll never be a loser. I have always been a go getter. I have always brought up the people around me in life especially if i was so lucky to be in a place to offer employment or financial help. Whether a travel shampoo or remembering your great aunts name and what state she grew up in all of it is little gestures so you know you are important, heard and loved. Any dollar given I can say without doubt will be somehow be paid back into our communities and society.

Every little bit counts and if you are able to help, THANK YOU.  Any extra funds will go towards promotion and business building. I have to wanted to reopen a brick and mortar salon but the reality of that is far fetched. If i'm putting hopes and dreams out there I would love to be able to do that once again. Any residual funds would be directed to that goal. let’s get through this scary time together and rebuild our communities.

Much love, Wes
