Roger Hart’s Story: Help Me Rebuild My Life and Return Home
Hello, my name is Roger Hart.
I am a 59-year-old Englishman living alone in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands. For nearly two decades, I worked as a professional greenkeeper, finding both joy and purpose in my work. My life was active and fulfilling, shaped by my love for the outdoors and the satisfaction of caring for beautiful landscapes.
This past February, just before my 59th birthday, everything changed. I underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from my right calf. Sadly, the operation was unsuccessful. Despite my medical team’s best efforts—including an arterial bypass—my leg could not be saved. I was faced with a devastating choice: risk my life in intensive care or lose my foot. I chose life, even though it meant saying goodbye to my foot and facing the challenges of life as a below-knee amputee.
Now, I am beginning the difficult process of rebuilding my life. My greatest wish is to return home to the UK, to Cornwall, where I can be close to my twin sister Kim—my soulmate, my support, and my family. Being near her would mean everything to me as I adjust to my new circumstances and focus on my recovery.
I am a new below-knee amputee, and I want to rebuild my life again. My immediate goal is to get a hand cycle so I can return to cycling, which will help improve both my physical and mental health. In the long term, I hope to acquire all the necessary equipment in order of priority, so I can regain as much independence as possible. The donations I receive will go towards specific “cost packages,” each addressing a crucial need.
First Package: Everyday Independence
Quickie QXi Ultralight Wheelchair – €2,176
Ergonomic Elbow Crutches – €80
Final Package: Moving Home and Starting Over
7-month rental + (Deposit) and living costs in Cornwall:
£1,500 per month × 7 months = £10,500
Removal costs from the Netherlands to the UK:
£1,500
Total for Third Package: £12,000
Other cost packages will follow as my needs evolve. Currently, I am being measured for my below-knee prosthetic and am also being assessed for an osseointegration operation, which, if successful, would better suit my ongoing medical conditions.
To make all of this possible, I am seeking your help. Your donation, no matter the size, will bring me closer to home and to the people I love. It will help me regain my independence, secure accessible accommodation, and cover essential living costs as I transition to life in the UK.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading my story, for any support you can offer, and for helping me share this campaign with others. With your help, I can look forward to a new chapter in Cornwall, surrounded by family, the comfort of home, and the hope of a brighter future.
With deepest gratitude,
Roger Hart
