(Hurley's message is long- if you want the short synopsis you can scroll to the bottom) Hi! My name is Hurley. I am a dashing 6 years old Golden Retriever. I live in a family with 3 brothers and sisters who are also Golden Retrievers, but I am the most handsome. I am the best boy in the whole wide world. I never do anything wrong. Well...almost never. I did something bad recently that got me into a lot of trouble. I ate a delicious stinky sock. I thought it would be alright but boy was I wrong. The sock got stuck in my small intestine, which made me really sick. My family took me to the ER vet because I stopped eating, which is NOT like me at all. I LOVE food. At the vet, they discovered that I had an intestinal blockage and would need surgery in order to remove it. the surgery was expensive. It cost my family 6, 300 dollars to get my sock out. They didn't question the cost though- they just knew they had to save my life. The doctor said that without surgery, it would be fatal. I am not sure what that word means but based on my parents' reaction, I don't think it's good. My family opened credit cards and put the cost of surgery on those. Once everything was paid for, they rolled me back into the operating room and I fell asleep. They had to make a BIG incision on my belly and cut into my small intestine to get the sock out. There was only about a 10 percent chance that I would encounter any complications so I went home the next day and my parents kept a very close eye on my 24.7. They even slept downstairs on the couch with me to make sure I was okay. A few days later, my belly started to really hurt again. I stopped eating and couldn't even stand up on my own. My family rushed me back to the ER vet. After some tests, they found out that my body broke down the intestinal repair before it was fully healed, which caused me to have sepsis in my belly. Again, my family was told that without surgery, I would die. That's when they told my parents the cost of the second surgery. It was going to cost anywhere from $7,500-10,000. This was surely becoming one expensive sock! The cost of the two surgeries combined was going to put more financial strain on my family than they could have ever imagined. They did not have the money to help me- but they love me so much that they opened more credit cards to fix me. They have no idea how they are going to pay the credit cards down, but they do know how much I mean to them. I had my second emergency surgery yesterday and I am currently in stable condition in the ICU. I will be here for several days. I have drains in my belly, I am on strong antibiotics, and am being given good pain medicine to help me feel comfortable. My family brought me a blanket from home to remind me to be strong while I recover. My family has done everything they can to help me so I thought that I could ask all of you to help them. If you find it in your heart to help support me, my life, and my recovery, please consider donating to help my family with the medical costs. I know that the surgery was really expensive- and I know that my family could have just put me down for a lot less- but I am so glad that they are giving me a fighting chance to live. I am only 6. I have so many more years left to take naps, to roll in the grass, and to love everyone around me. Short Synopsis: Hurley ate a sock and the original surgery to fix it was not cheap but worth the financial strain it would put on our family. Then, there were catastrophic complications and a second surgery was needed to save his life Total, the surgery will end up costing us around 16,600 dollars. We don't have this kind of money but we would give our lives to save our dogs. We have 4 golden retrievers and love every single one of them like a child.
