Hi. My name is Lisa and I am raising funds to help my amazing mum Theresa. She has had an incredibly rough few years, and finally has help in sight.
She has suffered from back pain for the past 30 years, and 3 years ago she began experiencing debilitating nerve pain in her right leg along with the already excruciatingback pain. After this new nerve pain started she went to a spinal surgeon who told her that she had a buldging disc and needed a spinal fusion. She underwent this surgery and when she had recovered (several painful months later) the nerve pain was there and just as bad as before. This surgeon then "dismissed" her from his clinic stating he wouldn't help and she shouldn't seek a second opinion. Obviously being in so much pain, I managed to talk her into getting more opinions, and a year later she underwent a spinal decompression to remove part of a buldging disc in her lower spine. When she woke this time again the pain was still there and just as bad. In between these surgeries she has also had several injections amliming to find the cause if her nerve pain. And a ablation surgery which was supposed to burn off nerves and help with the pain in her back. None of these invasive spinal surgeries have actually worked and each one took many months of hard recovery, just for her to end up at square one. I finally convinced my mum to get a whole new set of mri and ct scans taken, these results were sent directly to us and we found sacroiliitis diagnosed in the reports. We found a surgeon in the UK that deals with spinal and SI joint issues, as we were unable to find one in Ireland. He did a diagnostic injection into the SI joint and for the first time in years my mum was practically pain free for days. At a follow up appointment the surgeon has said the only treatment (due to the deterioration of the SI joint he could see on the scans) was an SI joint fusion. This surgery is going to fix the SI joint in place with 2 screws. It's has a 95% chance of improving her life and letting her live with less pain (which after all these years is all I want for her). We have managed to pay for all the other surgeries ourselves after a lot of saving, but to be totally honest this last surgery will cost just over €20,000. We are some of the way there, but her surgery date is set at Oct 18th and this time round, I have decided to ask for help. I dont know how we would raise this without help as we didn't know this surgery would be needed as soon as possible (we thought there would be more time). All funds raised will mean the world to both of us, I love my mum more than anything, shes my best friend and an amazing woman who deserves a chnace to live without nerve and back pain dictating how long she can stand/sit or do anything, she misses so much because of the pain she is in. All funds received will go directly to the hospital to cover fees. Thank you so much for reading, and thank you for any help!!
