My mom's road to recovery from brain surgery

On Friday, March 11th, my mom Maria underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a brain aneurysm that was thankfully found before it could rupture. After being initially misdiagnosed & not receiving a scan at an ER five days earlier for pain & blurred vision in her right eye, she knew that diagnosis didn't add up & something was still wrong. The pain & vision was getting worse as her eye became entirely closed up.

 

Thankfully we got in to see her usual doctor, who saw her after hours. Her doctor recognized that something was still wrong & helped get her in urgently to see an eye specialist. While they were both frustrated that we didn't initially receive a scan at our first ER visit, they were crucial in setting the wheels in motion to get immediate & proper care. They sent us to a different ER where she received the scan that revealed a brain aneurysm.

 

She was transferred to the University of Minnesota for neurosurgery, where coincidentally she spent 17 years of her life working on the campus in admissions. She had successful brain surgery to remove the aneurysm, is doing well & just resting thanks to the incredible staff here at the University of Minnesota, the team of neurosurgeons, every single nurse & specialist. We are now on the road to recovery with more rest & rehab.

 

On this road to recovery, my mom won't be able to work for the foreseeable future. I myself have already missed work & will continue to need more time away from work to help care for her through her rehab & recovery. The hospital bills are going to start piling up quickly as well.

 

If any of you have ever had the pleasure of meeting my mom, you probably love her nearly as much as I do. She has spent almost her entire life helping others all over the world, be it family, friends, students, veterans & animals. She's pretty much a saint who is a bright, shining light in this world & has sacrificed so much for me & anyone that has ever needed her help.

 

The universe keeps throwing everything at her. Losing two partners tragically, her youngest brother, surviving a near-fatal car accident, breast cancer & now a brain aneurysm added to that list. She's the most resilient person I know who has faced so many obstacles & ultimately is a survivor. I know she will fully recover & get past this, just like everything else she's overcome.
