As many of you know, my mom, Anne Quigley, has been battling Metastatic Breast Cancer for years.
Unfortunately, last Christmas our nightmare began as her cancer stopped responding to her chemotherapy treatment.
It began with pain in her legs from tumors that caused two broken femurs, severe lesions in her cervical spine (C4& C7 entirely shattered), many broken bones in her neck, two broken arms, and lesions in her shoulder after a total hip replacement (how she discovered the cancer years ago). She has had surgeries to put rods in both legs and has been undergoing harsh chemotherapy treatment for the last year while dealing with the pandemic.
My sister and i take turns caring for my mom. I have left my job to care for my mom 24/7 for the past year and four months. My dad is 73 years old and has a bad back so he is unable to pull my mom out of bed to take her to the bathroom.
I wanted to create this GoFundMe to help my parents with my mom’s overwhelming medical bills. She is no longer allowed to ride in a car (because of her broken neck) and is required to use stretcher transportation to doctors appointments and chemotherapy.
Unfortunately insurance only covers the chemotherapy and doctors appointments are $1,000 each way. Her medication expenses are outrageous ($400+/month) with insurance and the amount of unexpected medical bills from loopholes in insurance has been so unexpected. My dad is 73 years old and can’t retire yet and I would love to find a way to help them with these bills. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to return to work because I need to be here to care for my mom. My sister and I will eventually need to return work and will need to pay a caregiver at $25/hour. There is no assistance available for caregivers through insurance at this time because they have Medicare not medicaid.
Mom’s last petscan showed slight progression in her liver and skull bone. For this reason, they will be switching her chemotherapy treatment and she will lose the hair that she just grew back. She was so happy with her new hair and so sad to learn that she will have to lose it again. I would love to be able to get her a cooling scalp cap to prevent hair loss from chemo for Mother’s Day, but they start at $379/month out of pocket.
We appreciate any and all support and help. Metastatic breast cancer is a terrible diagnosis but my mom is a fighter with the best attitude and deserves the world.
