Hi Everyone,
My name is Lakes and the photo above is my mom. Like so many of you, I'm an only kid and I love my mom so much. She turned 50 this year and has always worked so very hard and tirelessly to make my life in Canada great. We’ve been living in Canada since 2007. In early December this year, she went back to China to visit my grandma and pay respects to my grandpa who passed away 3 years ago. She felt exhausted after her flight from Toronto to Beijing -- so fatigued she could barely make it out of the airport. However, she figured it was a combination of the long flight and her age. She became increasingly more and more sick over the next few days and finally visited a hospital in China to try and figure out what was wrong. The doctors eventually told her it is leukemia. There are different types of leukemia but hers is the type that advances rapidly when untreated. My mom is only 50 and received her diagnosis just a few days before Christmas.
There were 2 options for her treatment:
Option A) fly back to Canada immediately to receive treatment where she has health insurance through the Ontario government
Option B) receive treatment in China where my family must pay out-of-pocket
The doctors in China told her that she needed to start treatment right away given how advanced the Leukemia already was and how quickly it will develop over the next couple of days. Furthermore, they said the stress of travel to Canada could worsen her condition. When I heard the news, I immediately consulted our family doctor in Canada who told me the same thing - that she should not travel back from China to Canada in her condition. Option B became her only option.
My dad, who runs a convenient store in the Toronto Annex area, went back to support my mom through treatment as soon as he heard the news. I’m currently running the store as much as I can while my parents are away, but the lease on the store expires February 2019; after that, the only source of income for my family will be my part-time job as a swimming instructor.
My mom is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Guanzhong, China and is at the end of her first chemotherapy cycle. Next, she will go through a second chemotherapy cycle. Depending on the effectiveness of the cycles, the doctors will proceed with a bone marrow transplant. The full length of her treatment is unknown at this point and will depend on her body's response.
Once again, I am appealing for help since we are faced with the unexpected and impossible mountain of paying for all her medical bills. Therefore, I'm setting up this page to help pay for her treatment.
My current goal is $20,000 and I will share updates as her treatment progresses.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story and to support the fund.
