On Sunday 9/1 my mom became ill. By Wednesday she was diagnosed with the flu and doing worse by Wednesday night. Thursday morning a my Uncle's fiance , Carolyn, was called by my grandparents to check on my Mom. My Mom lives with my grandparents and helps to care for them.
When Carolyn found my Mom, she was sitting on a chair in her tub completely incoherent. This was at about 9:15am. Previously at 8:45am my Mom texted my wife and I and told us that Carolyn was on her way over. That was the last time I spoke to my Mom. She was rushed to a local hospital (AdventHealth Apopka) and I drove up to see her. When I arrived they wouldn't let me back because they were beginning to do a procedure to intubate her.
I finally got to go back and see her but she was already intubated and sleeping from the medication. I left to go pick up two of my kids from school and then I received a horrifying phone call. The lady introduced herself as the attending doctor for the Emergency Dept and she almost immediately said my Mom was going to die. She said the only hope she had is to be airlifted to Orlando where they have an ECMO machine (aka Iron Lung).
Since then, she has been in the operating room (OR) twice. The first time to insert two cannula's to hook-up the ECMO machine. After 24 hours she developed a clot on the inlet side of the ECMO machine and her heartbeat stopped for about 10 seconds. Thankfully she recovered on her own but they decided to put her back into the OR for emergency surgery. They replaced the cannula and she is now back in the cadio-vascular intensive care unit (CVICU).
She has been diagnosed with severe pneumonia in her left lung, the flu and the corona virus. They have been trying for two days to wake her but when she begins to wake, she thrashes around and they become concerned so they put her back to sleep with medication. She was hooked up on dialysis last night and that appears to be helping to clear her lungs.
The Dr. told us she will most likely be on the ECMO machine for weeks and that is only the beginning of the recovery process.
Our family wanted to create this GoFundMe page to provide financial support for Mom. She is such a special person. She will literally drop everything to help anyone in need. Her family & friends are her world, especially her three grandkids, Hannah, Brooke, & Olivia. They love her so much and can't wait to get back their Memaw time. The last thing we want my Mom to stress about when she awakes is unforeseen medical expenses and lost income.
Please donate what you can to help her during this difficult time. Anything will help!
Our family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts,
Mike, Kristina, Hannah, Brooke, & Olivia Richards
