Pradeep Rai (24 years old) and his wife Smita immigrated to Sudbury, Ontario from Nepal in January 2020. He came with a dream to help his wife pursue her education and to also fulfill some of his own dreams. An unexpected accident have left them worried about their immediate future.

On June 6th, my husband Pradeep and two of his friends were driving down Lorne street on their way to go fishing when, all of a sudden, a red SUV swirved across the center line and struck their vehicle. Pradeep, who was sitting in the backseat, was knocked unconscious by the impact. The paramedics rushed him to the hospital (Health Sciences North), where they performed emergency surgery to stop the internal bleeding. As part of that surgery, the doctors needed to remove part of his intestine. His other injuries included a sternal fracture, cardiac contusion, and wound infection, among others. Had the paramedics not arrived and rushed him to the hospital so quickly, he may not have made it. We are incredibly grateful to all the medical staff involved in his care.
Currently, Pradeep is receiving home care services and recovering back at our apartment in Sudbury. He is trying his best to remain positive and count his blessings. However, along with challenge of coming to terms with his injuries, he has also become worried about our short-term future here in Canada. Before the accident, I was studying at Cambrian College, pursuing my Postgraduate diploma in Human Resources Management and working part-time, while Pradeep was working full-time to support us. Now, all that has changed. Following 2 major surgeries, my husband has been instructed to take full rest for at least 8 weeks. Even beyond that, it is not clear when he will be able to return to work. Our financial situation has become precarious.
We have made an insurance claim related to the accident, but that will take time to be processed. In the meantime, we are in need of some assistance. We’re new to Sudbury. We’ve travelled across the world to be here, so we only have a limited number of friends and contacts in Sudbury at the moment. We kindly request donations to help us cope with the near-term financial burden that this unexpected accident has caused us. I want my husband to be stress free and not worry about our challenges so that he can concentrate on his recovery.
Please help us achieve this goal. Our heartfelt gratitude towards all helping hands.
