My House Burned Down at GDC
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Evan Balster. I have been involved in independent games since 2007, attending many events since then. I am known for audio programming, making tea for my colleagues and playing accordion in the park.
My house burned down the night before GDC. We had been recharging a used E-bike battery which violently exploded at 1AM, igniting some outdoor furnishings and a nearby propane tank. Within minutes a spray of fire overtook our RV. I live with a disabled relative and three cats. She was able to get our oldest cat out of the house and we believe the other two escaped.
Despite the efforts of the local fire department, our home continued to burn for over an hour. It was a total loss — including computer equipment, notebooks and mementos. We were not insured. I was fortunate to have traveled heavy, bringing many of my favorite things to GDC on an Amtrak train. At this point, my hostel room contains most of my worldly possessions.
This misfortune came on the heels of 13 months of long COVID which left my business and resources badly strained. I am seeking mutual aid as I and my family member seek to rehome ourselves and rebuild our lives in Northwestern Washington.
